Union welcomes end to BNFL uncertainty

Britain’s largest nuclear union has said that Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling’s statement over the sale of the British Nuclear Group is a welcome end to the uncertainty facing the workforces at BNG and Nexia Solutions.

Summing up the views of 6,000 scientists, engineers and professional staff in BNG, Prospect National Secretary Mike Graham said:

"While disappointed that the Secretary of State has opted to follow the recommendations of the BNFL Board and break up BNG and its skill base, our members are at least grateful that this decision ends months of uncertainty over the future of the business.

"We can now look ahead and will be working closely with the reactor sites management team to ensure any purchaser of the business is a quality long-term player who will invest in workforce skills.

"It is essential that the new owners are of the same calibre as BNG and have established track records in the fields of health, safety, security and environmental performance. Proven ability at effective change management and good industrial relations will also be vital for the success of the new employers."

Graham also described the plans for the creation of a National Nuclear Laboratory incorporating the Nexia Solutions business as positive step forward. "This will bring the UK into line with other civil key nuclear countries such as the USA, France and Japan. It will be a key element in any new nuclear build programme and is clear indication that new generators are firmly on the government’s agenda."

However, he said, the union will be seeking assurances from the government that when the Sellafield contract is put out to tender it will be for the whole business and not a piecemeal competition process.
