Prospect's BAA members vote for strike action

Managerial, technical and support staff at UK airport operator BAA have voted in favour of taking industrial action following the breakdown of talks to resolve their ongoing pay dispute.

The ballot of Prospect’s members produced a 53% vote in favour of strike action while 83% backed action short of a strike, which is likely to include a ban on overtime working and the withdrawal of goodwill.

BAA has been notified of the ballot result. Prospect negotiator Ben Middleton said the union would finalise its plan of action following discussions with the other BAA unions – Unite and PCS.

“Our overriding focus will be to persuade the company that there needs to be a genuine dialogue on the way forward if we are to avoid disruption to the work of the company,” he said.

The ballot follows members’ rejection of a pay offer that would provide a 1% increase to basic salary, with a further 0.5% linked to a new attendance management policy.

Members were also outraged by BAA’s decision not to honour a £450 one-off payment agreed as part of the 2009 deal.

Prospect represents 100+ members based at Heathrow, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Southampton and Stansted airports.
