Prospect warns MOD specialists are vital for supply chain

Prospect has welcomed the report of the Public Accounts Committee into the Ministry of Defence’s use of information to manage the defence logistics supply chain.

Negotiator Kevin McAlonan said: “The report echoes many of the concerns our members have been voicing for years, namely that the historical underinvestment in MOD is now proving to be a very real threat to the management of supplies to the frontline.

“But the measures identified to improve the efficiency of supply operations, such as the Future Logistics Information Services project, will fail if the skilled staff needed to operate the system are lost in a drive to axe one in three MOD civilian posts.

“The report specifically highlights the need to retain ‘key skilled staff in the supply chain management’. Yet these are the very people that the MOD is looking to shed under its Voluntary Early Release Scheme, effectively bypassing any informed discussion over which specialists MOD needs to make essential improvements and ensure its crucial intelligent customer role.”
