Prospect asks AMs to sign its policy pledge

Prospect, the union for 5,000 engineers, scientists, managers and specialists in Wales, is taking its pledge campaign to the Welsh Senedd on Tuesday 4 March to get the attention of politicians of all hues ahead of the general election in 2015.

The campaign calls on union members to send 'pledge' cards to their elected representatives and encourage them to sign up to policy ideas put forward by the union.

The pledges call for:

  • a commitment to more women in science and technology careers
  • procurement policies that protect workplace rights
  • more investment in skills for jobs in the energy sector
  • an independent review of specialist civil servants' pay
  • a stronger relationship between Prospect members and politicians.

Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy said: "Prospect is the voice for professionals and specialists in the public and private sectors and our politically neutral, evidence-based approach to policy is what our members demand. The pledges are part of our blueprint for rational government and that is why we want the support of the Welsh political community.

"In the run up to the next general election, we are looking to influence public policy for the good of the economy, workplaces and individuals. Our pledges go to the heart of the challenges we face.

"Be that ensuring we remain a leading powerhouse for science and technology; retaining the skills and expertise within our civil service to guarantee the impartial specialist advice needed to protect the public interest; or linking public procurement projects to measures to provide more apprenticeships as well as secure, interesting and fulfilling jobs."

The campaign launch will be opened at 12.45 by Prospect chair of the All Wales Forum, Robert Phillips. Other speakers include: Bethan Jenkins AM (Plaid Cymru); Eluned Parrott AM (Lib Dems); Julie Morgan AM (Labour); Robert Davies AM representative (Conservative); and Mike Clancy.

There will be a photo opportunity at 1.15 when AMs will be invited to sign the Prospect Pledge book. Union members, working for employers as diverse as BT, the Intellectual Property Office, the National Library, National Resources Wales, the National Trust, the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics and Quotient, among others, will also be on hand to answer questions and share their experiences.

If you would like to attend please contact Prospect's Cardiff office on 029 2066 7770.

The campaign has already attracted wide support in the House of Commons and the Scottish Parliament. The union will be taking its message to the members of the Northern Ireland Assembly next week.
