Urgent need to switch subs payments to direct debit

Delegates to Prospect’s civil service sector conference in June backed an executive committee call an urgent and sustained campaign across the civil service to persuade members who pay their subscriptions by check off to change to direct debit.

The aim of the emergency motion was to ensure that Prospect does not lose any members where civil service employers have withdrawn the check-off facility deducting subs from wages.

The motion instructed the sector and branches to work with full-time staff to:

  • identify priority areas
  • participate in a programme to contact members individually
  • visit workplaces
  • review the project’s success.

Another emergency motion, from the British Library branch, instructed the executive to work with Prospect’s heritage group in lobbying the government to support heritage; and raise awareness of the problems faced by civil servants in the sector through increased campaigning.
