Safety Minister in surprise visit to Sizewell A

Safety minister Lord McKenzie has toured the Sizewell A nuclear site in Suffolk at the invitation of trade unionists at the plant

Lord McKenzie was received by Paul Wilkinson, Site Director, Ray Pascoe, senior Prospect workplace representative, Mark Lesinski, Managing Director for Magnox South, and Mike Graham, Prospect National Secretary for the nuclear industry.

The minister heard at first hand from local Prospect reps and management how Sizewell had achieved its remarkable safety record during 40 years of operation, which has been recognised by ROSPA, the achievement of ISO standards and other safety awards.

The minister, who is responsible for health and safety at work and the Health and Safety Executive, is hoping to learn good practice from the information, consultation and inspection procedures at the plant.

Sizewell A, along with all the other Magnox South reactors, is in the earlier stages of a defuelling and decommissioning programme run by Energy Solutions. The other Magnox South sites are at Bradwell, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A and Berkeley.

Welcoming the minister on behalf of the plant’s 430 employees, Mike Graham said: “Sizewell A leads the premier league for health and safety. The site’s record speaks for itself and is a beacon for other workplaces in the industry and beyond.

“Lord McKenzie has taken a close interest in the health and safety arrangements at the plant. These are not only vital for the health of the workforce and the local community but make good business sense.”

Paul Wilkinson, Site Director said: “Bill’s visit to Sizewell A has been a great pleasure and it has given us the opportunity to demonstrate our approach and commitment to health and safety.”
