Joint lobby tomorrow for rights in retirement

Prospect retired and working members are urged to support tomorrow's lobby of parliament by the National Pensioners' Convention in support of Rights in Retirement.

Pensioners will be joined by six education unions, who will be there to show MPs the strength of their opposition to the government's proposals to attack public sector pensions –  particularly contribution increases, raising the retirement age, and plans to exclude independent school teachers from a future pension scheme.

As well as the RPI-CPI switch, the NPC is focusing on three key demands:

  • Raising the state pension for everyone above the official poverty level of around £178 a week (60% median population income before housing costs)
  • Introducing good quality care through a national care service, funded through general taxation
  • Helping pensioners combat fuel poverty by paying a winter fuel allowance of £500 to all pensioner households

The pensioners lobby will assemble for a photo opportunity at 12 noon, College Green, opposite the House of Lords.

Between 1-3pm, a rally will be held in Committee Room 14, House of Commons. It will be chaired by Frank Cooper, NPC president. The speakers will include Kelvin Hopkins MP, Caroline Lucas MP, Greg McClymont MP (shadow pensions minister), Steve Webb MP (pensions minister), Christine Blower NUT, Dave Prentis UNISON, Diana Holland UNITE, Mike Duggan CSPA, Rhianon Wilson of the NPC Health Working Party and Dot Gibson NPC.

Attendees will also be lobbying their MPs during the day.
