Energy: is the UK’s policy fit for purpose?

What do the government's proposals on electricity market reform mean for consumers? And what role does nuclear power have to play post-Fukushima? These are just two of the issues to be tackled during a seminar being organised by energy union Prospect that will pose the question; Energy policy – is it fit for purpose?



The event – taking place at 10am on November 14 at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, London – will bring together key opinion formers from industry, regulation and the government to explore the UK’s ability to implement a balanced and secure low-carbon energy policy.

Keynote speaker and Energy Minister Charles Hendry will open the event after which a panel featuring Shadow Energy Secretary Caroline Flint MP, RWE Npower’s Director of Regulation and Public Affairs, Guy Johnson, Policy Manager at the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy, Amisha Patel, and Prospect’s Deputy General Secretary Mike Clancy will debate the government’s road map for energy.

The afternoon session will hear from Vincent de Rivaz, Chief Executive of EDF Energy, on the choices to made regarding climate change and John Donald, Inspector of Nuclear Installations, will discuss nuclear safety post-Fukushima.

Further speakers include Craig Bennett, Director of Policy and Campaigns at Friends of the Earth; Andrew Jamieson, Regulation and Markets Director, Scottish Power Renewables; Sue Guest, Strategy Manager at the National Skills Academy for Power and TUC Senior Policy Officer, Philip Pearson.
