Nuclear union welcomes new waste store study

The largest union for nuclear industry employees has welcomed the announcement that a new consultation is to explore the options for managing the UK's stock of radioactive waste.

The aim of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's consultation is to find a suitable site for a geological disposal facility through the principle of volunteerism.

On behalf of 12,000 members in the nuclear industry, Prospect deputy general secretary Garry Graham said: "It is imperative that we have an open and transparent process which is evidence-based.

"If a repository is not built, we will still have nuclear waste, but it will continue to be stored above ground.

"Investigations into the suitability of a site in Cumbria were terminated prematurely earlier this year in a blow to the industry. I hope we can learn the lessons of that process and ensure that the government clearly states the benefits and support any host community will receive.

"That includes the number of high-quality skilled jobs created throughout the construction process and beyond into the maintenance phase."

Graham said Prospect would make the case at all levels to ensure the public and local communities are fully included in all debates and can make decisions based on scientific fact and not misunderstood perceptions.

"It is important to recognise that a safe long-term solution is of critical national importance," he said.
