Scottish airport staff begin “work to rule” as first 48-hour strike ends

A 48-hour strike by Prospect members working in airport group HIAL’s security company AMSL ended at lunchtime today, but industrial action in pursuit of equal treatment will continue with a “work to rule”.

This action will see an indefinite ban on over-time and rest day working as well as covering for senior staff.

“Today concludes the first phase of our action, and we would like to thank members of the public in Scotland for the patience, support and understanding they have shown us over the last 48 hours,” said Alan Denney, Prospect national secretary.

“We have yet to receive notification of a formal offer from HIAL or an invitation to a meeting. However, we are more than willing to enter into dialogue with conciliation service ACAS in order to settle this long-running dispute.”

Prospect has noted the potentially illegal use of agency workers by the airports group to break the strike, and has taken the matter up with its owners, the Scottish government. It is also considering a formal complaint to the relevant regulator.

In the six years since HIAL brought security in house, management has failed to agree equal pay, holidays, and sick pay for AMSL’s airport security workers.

The union represents more than 120 of AMSL’s 160 workers covering eleven Scottish airports including Dundee, Inverness, Stornoway and Sumburgh.
