New exhibition to highlight vital work of technicians

A new exhibition, Technicians Make it Happen, commissioned by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation, seeks to challenge outdated notions of who technicians are and what they do.

Through photography, painting, video and artefacts, the free exhibition explores the crucial role technicians play across society and the rich diversity of the occupations that can rightfully and proudly be defined as ‘technician’.

Technicians are the linchpins of the UK economy. They play a crucial role in the growth of businesses that employ them. They don’t always have technician in their job title, but there’s barely a business in the country that could function without them.

Hannah Stanwix, from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation said: “From the sole trader plumber to the forensic lab technician, this country would grind to a halt if it wasn’t for the 1.5 million people who together are our nation’s technician workforce.

“Come and meet the technicians who make so much happen,” she added.

The event runs from 4 to 9 April 2016 at the Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1. It will be open from 10am to 5pm (3pm on the final day).

Prospect’s RegTech project, funded by the Gatsby Foundation, aims to promote and support technician registration.

The union is working with organisations including Diamond Light SourceBRE and the John Innes Centre, to encourage and support potential recipients.
