The ballot saw 89% of those who took part vote in favour of the proposal. APFO represents brigade managers, area managers and equivalent.

Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy said: “This is very welcome news – APFO will strengthen Prospect’s diverse membership in hazardous and security-critical areas, which includes fire managers at airports and in London Fire Brigade.”

Justin Johnston, APFO chair, added: “Becoming a branch within Prospect secures APFO’s future and will allow us to retain our identity, while giving us a bigger voice as well as the platform to help grow membership.

“Members can also look forward to the support of Prospect’s dedicated specialist staff including pensions officers, a legal team, and experienced negotiators.”
