QinetiQ’s £1bn contract demonstrates faith in growth potential of defence sector

A £1bn deal for defence technology firm QinetiQ to modernise and operate MoD air ranges and test aircrew training has been welcomed by Prospect union.

The new deal forms part of an existing 25-year contract, ending in 2028, to deliver test and evaluation services for the military, and will see QinetiQ invest £180m in upgrading facilities and equipment at Aberporth, Hebrides and the Empire Test Pilots’ School at Boscombe Down.

It is anticipated the investment, which will also see QinetiQ develop new, collaborative ways of working, will deliver £300m in efficiency savings and help sell services into international markets.

“This show of faith in both QinetiQ and our members who work there is extremely welcome, said Prospect deputy general secretary Dai Hudd.

“This is exactly the sort of investment that the industry needs to see more of, focused as it is on technology, growth and exploring export potential.

“It is also encouraging that QinetiQ is taking a joined-up approach to delivery in terms of partnering across the defence enterprise, including with SMEs. This is an approach in tune with the latest thinking on a defence industrial policy.

“All too often it is thought that the best the defence sector can hope for is to hold the line, but the reality is that there is huge growth potential if government and industry invests in the right areas.”
