If the GDF siting process is conducted with the right expert input, based on appropriate scientific evidence, and in consultation with local communities, we can resolve the issue of long-term storage for the UK’s nuclear waste legacy, while also creating hundreds of skilled jobs.

For the process to be a success, there is an urgent need to ensure consistent and meaningful input from the nuclear workforce.  Trade unions have a central role to play in explaining case for a long-term solution to nuclear waste management and in facilitating communication between stakeholders.

Sue Ferns, Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary, said, “The UK needs to reach a decision on the siting of a Geological Disposal Facility, and this consultation is a critical step in the process. Trade union involvement is essential. The government needs to reach out to the nuclear workforce and fully engage with them.”
